May 2017 Wrap-Up

Phew, another month I promised to blog more and I didn’t. Please don’t throw things at me, I’m trying. Adult life is more planning to do things, then getting so caught up responsibilities that you can never do them. I’ve been writing a lot, which is good, but not writing here, which I really want to do. Anyways, on to the books! Even though I didn’t get through nearly as many as I wanted to. 😦

The Secret History by Donna Tartt

5/5 Stars

I don’t usually reach for adult fiction books often because I’ve been burned on so many of them, but this one was definitely not one of those. It drew me in with the promise of a story of a group of misfits who study Classical History (which I happen to study) and an enigmatic professor they worship. I expected a lot of things from this author after seeing all the praises for her work for both this novel and The Goldfinch, and I can proudly say that she did not disappoint.

The characters in this story, especially the main group the novel focuses on, were so vivid and real that it felt like I knew each of them on a deeper level by the time I closed the book for the last time. Not all of them were good people, quite the contrary. They’re people who most certainly do bad things, but you actually sympathize and rationalize a lot of their actions. In front of the backdrop of a small liberal arts college the drama was so delicious and addicting. The combination of all these factors made for a perfect score in all categories.

It took so long for me to finally get to this, but I did it! I read through the second Outlander book! I really wanted to continue on with the show, but could not allow myself to without reading the book first. It took me a whole month to get through the audiobook. I won’t lie, I was pretty disappointed and probably rated generously.

I won’t delve in to the specifics about the plot, nor give away any important details, but I found myself a bit lost in this one. In the first book, it was very rich and engrossing. The political intrigue was enjoyable and the characters were so interesting. The first half of this book was wonderful. There was so much court intrigue, gossiping courtiers and genuinely enthralling plots. But the second half of the book I struggled to get through. When it got to the more action packed part of the book I found myself dreading having to finish it, which made me so mad because I had been looking forward to getting to the next one. The characters got dull and the plot was getting extremely boring. Now, I’m not sure I’m going to continue reading the series. I may just stick with the TV show. I haven’t decided for sure yet. Comment below if you’re familiar with the series at all and let me know what your thoughts are.

A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J Maas

5/5 Stars

I decided to listen to both the first and second books in the series before tackling the inevitable end of the series. I fell in love with the book all over again while listening to it and got re-familiarized with the characters, the plot, etc. Now, I will be the first person to admit the series can be problematic at times, but you know what, I eat all the drama and romance up. I love it. I adore these books and probably always will. This was my third time reading through it, and I would still give it a perfect score.

I wish I could mention more, but I had a pretty slow reading month. I’ve had a pretty slow reading year if we’re being honest. I’m hoping this reading streak that I’ve been on in the last week continues. Let me know what you thought of any of the books mentioned above in the comments below!
